🔋 Set Up My Macbook
What you should know about your computer
As a new member of the Octopus team, you will receive a brand new laptop to work with. 🤤 You’ll receive this by post, if you work remote, or on your first day in the office.
Keep in mind that your laptop is considered a company device. While we're not peeping over your shoulder, it's best to keep things strictly work-related on it, so that stuff doesn't get lost or mixed up. You will be expected to take good care of it, and if you ever decide to sail to new horizons, we'll need it back.
⚠️ If it gets lost or damaged, you’ll need to let us know immediately so we can remotely wipe it.
For more info on our guidelines check out this page here.
Ordering additional equipment
If you would like some additional equipment, such as keyboards, mouses or extra screens, you can request them from our Novatech Portal (check out this guide here).
Start your computer
⚠️ Before you start, make sure your Okta account has been activated.
Ready? Great. Start up your new Mac, and make sure it has enough battery (the set-up process should take around half an hour).
The initial steps are similar to setting up any other MacBook. You will be asked to:
Select your country or region.
Choose your preferred language
Customise it to your specific needs related to vision, hearing, physical motor activities, and speech.
Select a Wifi network.
⚠️ When possible, connect the laptop to an ethernet internet connection (by cable). If you’re based in our offices this can be done by connecting your Mac device to one of the display monitors on every desk via the single USB-C cable.
Set up Remote Management (Kandji)
As soon as you’re connected to the internet, you should be directed to a window called Remote Management. This is run by Kandji, our remote-management app.
Select Continue, and a page featuring Kandji's logo should pop up, eventually leading you to an Okta login page.
⚠️ If you do not get taken to the following pages, please don't continue, as the set-up process won't work properly!
Instead, follow these steps:
Reboot your laptop by holding the power button down until the screen turns off.
After rebooting, make sure that you are connected to the internet.
Once connected, try the setup process again.
If the Remote Management screen still does not appear after following the above steps, please reach out to us at techops-help@octopusenergy.group and we’ll put you back on track.
If everything's running smoothly, go ahead and sign in with your Okta account details. You will be asked to approve your sign-in from your Okta Verify app that you’ve already set up on your phone.
Create a Computer Account
Create a computer account name and password. This is different from your Okta account
⚠️ Remember to choose a passphrase that’s both long and memorable.Turn on location services (give that box a tick, it will make sure your device is set to the right time-zone)
Set Up Touch ID. Make sure you DON'T skip that step!
Select your preferred display style
Install our company’s software
Good news! You don’t have to do anything for this part of the process. If all is going smoothly, a box like this one will pop up, letting you know that your Mac is installing the essential apps you’ll need.
If the box with the swirling octopus (also known as Constantine) does not come up within 10 minutes, try rebooting your Mac and log back in. Still no luck? Just give us a shout at techops-help@octopusenergy.group, and we'll jump in to help out!
This installation process should take around 20 minutes, but it might be a little longer depending on how fast your internet connection is. We don’t expect you to recognise any of the apps we’re installing for you, so don’t panic! We’ll introduce you to them in due course.
Finish and restart your computer
After the applications are installed, simply click Finish and you'll find yourself at your desktop.
From the Apple menu in the top left corner, click Restart.
⚠️This is important so that Filevault encryption is activated on your device. This will also send a recovery code to our systems, which can help us reset your Mac password in case you forget it down the line.
